How to download and install Ledger Live wallet

Ledger Live – is the official software for your Ledger hardware device (Ledger Nano S and Ledger Nano X). There are many other open source programs that you can use to connect and use your Ledger Nano device. However, you still need Ledger live software to install applications on the hardware device and update the firmware. Thus, if you are using a Ledger device, you cannot opt out of using the Ledger Live program. Ledger Live update on mobile devices

Google Play store and IOS Store automatically check the integrity of the program. In addition, your cell phone (iOS/Android) automatically updates the program to the latest version when there is a new update. So, on your cell phone, you don’t have to worry about updates. It’s safe to do so. However, if you are using Ledger Live on a desktop computer, you need to take some precautions before using the program.

The version number 2.44.0 will change in the future.

Note: Now before installing the program on your PC, you need to check its integrity. You can verify the ledger live program download by using the sha512 hash. Only after verification you should proceed with the installation.

Installation in Windows: After downloading, double-click the win.exe file. Click yes to allow the installation and click finish when the installation is complete.

Mac installation: Download the mac.zip file, unzip it, and open the downloaded .dmg file. Then drag and drop the Ledger Live program into the Applications folder. After that, launch Ledger Live from Launchpad or Spotlight and click open to allow installation.

Linux installation: In Linux, you can install Ledger live using either the command line interface or the graphical user interface.

Download the Ledger Live application image. Go to the downloads folder, right-click the application image and select properties. Next, go to the Permissions tab and in the Execute field check the Allow executing file as program checkbox.

If you are using version 2.29 or higher, a notification bar will appear at the top of the Ledger screen indicating that a new update is available.

When you find this banner, click the Download Update button. The new version will download and then an Install Now button will appear. Click the Install Now button to complete the installation. When the installation is complete, click Finish to open the new version of Ledger live. That’s it. Your Ledger live program has been updated to the latest version.

You can also manually update the Ledger live program. Follow the link, select your platform and download the latest version. You need to verify the hash before installation. After successful verification, click Install Now to update your current Ledger live program to the latest version.

Ledger Security

Ledger hardware wallets are independently certified, verified and designed to withstand sophisticated cyberattacks. But what about their Ledger live software? And what’s the status of firmware updates?

This issue came to light after Ledger addressed the data of its customers. The company, which creates one of the most reliable and secure hardware wallets, failed to protect its customers’ data. A hacker attack resulted in thousands of customers’ data being leaked. This happened in late 2020 and had nothing to do with wallet security, private keys or mnemonic seeds. Only the customer database was leaked. However, you should be careful not to fall victim to a phishing attack.

Even in hardware wallets, there are newcomers who lose their coins. Not because the security of the hardware wallet device suffers, but simply because they fall victim to a phishing attack. Losing seeds or voluntarily handing them over to hackers is one way to lose your coins.

Remember that you should only type seed on the hardware wallet device. Never enter a seed phrase or passphrase anywhere. Do not enter your mnemonic phrase on websites. Never, ever click anything in emails. They often contain links to malware. Also, don’t respond to emails, private messages or SMS about resetting your hardware wallet. There are keyloggers, there are “backdoors”. Therefore, the only safe way to store seeds is to write or engrave them on a metal medium.

How safe are Ledger Live updates?

If Ledger’s database can be hacked, how does it protect its server that controls software and hardware updates?

After the Ledger leak, one of the biggest concerns for users has been firmware updates and real-time Ledger updates. What if a hacker breaks into Ledger’s servers and injects a malicious version? All it takes is one unscrupulous Ledger programmer to release a new update with a malicious version.

Because the company’s software is closed-source, there is currently no third-party verification of software and firmware updates to confirm security. No one can see the code and ensure that the device firmware is not set up to pass keys to a hacker. Because of this uncertainty, many users put off software and hardware updates.

Can you imagine the damage that could be done to the industry by a fraudulent software or firmware update? In addition, the Ledger download page does not provide a version of the PGP signature. All they provide is a sha512 hash for each new update, which doesn’t do much to improve security.
