Step 1: Download

  1. Go to the official BitPay website.
  2. Navigate to the Download section.

    • Windows
    • macOS
    • Linux

⚠️ Always download from the official website to avoid malicious software.

Step 2: Install

  • Windows: Open the .exe file and follow the installation wizard.
  • macOS: Open the .dmg file and drag the app into Applications.
  • Linux: Install using the provided package (AppImage, Snap, or distribution-specific package).

After installation, launch the application.

2️⃣ Create a New Wallet

  1. Open BitPay Desktop Wallet.
  2. Click “Create a New Wallet.”
  3. Choose:
    • Cryptocurrency (e.g., BTC, ETH, etc.)
    • Wallet type (personal or shared)
  4. Set a wallet name.
  5. The app will generate a 12-word recovery phrase (seed phrase).

Important:

  • Write the recovery phrase down on paper.
  • Store it offline in a secure location.
  • Do NOT store it in screenshots or cloud storage.
  • Anyone with this phrase can access your funds.
  1. Confirm the recovery phrase when prompted.
  2. Set a spending password (if required).

Your wallet is now ready.

3️⃣ Import an Existing Wallet

If you already have a recovery phrase:

  1. Open BitPay Desktop Wallet.
  2. Click “Import Wallet.”
  3. Enter your 12-word recovery phrase.
  4. Set a new password.
  5. Wait for blockchain synchronization.

Your funds will appear once syncing is complete.

4️⃣ Receive Cryptocurrency

  1. Open your wallet.
  2. Select the cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin).
  3. Click “Receive.”
  4. Copy the wallet address or display the QR code.
  5. Share the address with the sender.

✔ Always double-check the currency network before receiving funds.

6️⃣ Adjust Network Fees

For supported coins (like Bitcoin):

  • You may be able to select:
    • Economy (lower fee, slower confirmation)
    • Normal
    • Priority (higher fee, faster confirmation)

Choose according to urgency.

7️⃣ Backup and Security Best Practices

✔ Keep your recovery phrase offline.
✔ Use a strong computer password.
✔ Enable system antivirus and updates.
✔ Never share your seed phrase.
✔ Consider using a hardware wallet for large amounts.

BitPay does not store your private keys. If you lose your recovery phrase, your funds cannot be recovered.

8️⃣ Add Additional Wallets

You can create multiple wallets within the app:

  1. Click “Add Wallet.”
  2. Select the cryptocurrency.
  3. Follow the creation steps again.

This is useful for separating savings, trading, or business funds.

9️⃣ Sync with Mobile (Optional)

You can use the same recovery phrase in the BitPay mobile app to access the same wallet across devices.

⚠️ Only do this on trusted devices.

🔟 Troubleshooting

Wallet not syncing?

  • Check internet connection.
  • Restart the app.
  • Ensure you are using the latest version.

Transaction stuck?

  • Check blockchain explorer for status.
  • If fee was too low, it may take longer to confirm.

Download BitPay Wallet for Windows

Mobile (IOS/Android):

BitPay invoices are now both payment protocol and peer-to-peer compatible.  If you choose to pay from a wallet that supports payment protocol, you will be able to copy and paste the Payment URL into the paying wallet or scan the QR code to trigger the payment prompt. If you choose to pay from a peer-to-peer wallet, you will be able to copy and paste the receiving address and exact amount to send. For the best payment experience, BitPay suggests using wallets that are updated to work with Payment Protocol.

Learn more about why BitPay suggests Payment Protocol wallets for payments.

Top benefits of using Payment Protocol:

  • Payment Protocol makes sure you send exactly the right amount of Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash.
  • With Payment Protocol you don’t need to worry about failed payments, delayed orders, or refunds.
  • Payment Protocol adds new security to payments, protecting you from sending payments to imposters or attackers.
  • Payment Protocol makes sure you include a high enough miner fee for the Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash network to confirm your transaction.

What about other popular wallets?

If your favorite wallet is not on this list, feel free to carefully use the invoice address to make a payment without Payment Protocol. Our goal isn’t to limit users’ wallet choices. We are working with other wallet providers in the Bitcoin ecosystem to advance adoption of the Bitcoin Payment Protocol. We created and released a simpler JSON interface for Payment Protocol which will make it easier for wallets to adopt these improvements. Widespread adoption of Payment Protocol will immediately improve the bitcoin payment experience.
